Mould contamination has triggered a recall on 10L boxes of Mt Ossa Australian Natural Spring Water.

The affected batches were sold at Woolworths in NSW and Queensland, and have a best before of June 15, 2028.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) said products contaminated with mould “may cause illness if consumed”.

“Consumers should not eat this product,” FSANZ said in a recall alert.

“Consumers should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.”

The alert comes after shoppers posted to social media about unwanted finds in their purchased water.

“We opened one of ours and found grey algae-like floaties suspended throughout the water,” said one consumer.

“It wasn’t visible from the outside of the box, so there was no way to know it was contaminated until it was opened.

“We’ve contacted the company but wanted to let others know so they can check any boxes they may have purchased around the same time.

“If you’ve bought this water recently, it might be worth opening it and having a good look before drinking it.”

Consumer concerns

Others commented that they had discovered the same issue.

“Me and my partner have experienced the same thing with two boxes we’ve bought in Burleigh Heads,” one shopper said. A third said: “I Googled this because we just found the exact same on our Ossa water purchased for camping and found your post! Same best before as yours. Purchased in Brookwater Woolies.”
