Sunscreens are set for a major shake-up with the Therapeutic Goods Administrator proposing a significant change to the packaging Australians are used to.

The proposed changes include improving the transparency of testing procedures and dramatically simplifying labelling requirements.

Under the new system, SPF numbers would be removed entirely and replaced with simple ratings of low, medium, high and very high protection levels.

The reforms come after consumer group Choice found last year that 16 out of 20 popular sunscreen brands failed to meet their SPF label claims.

The findings raised serious concerns about sun protection for Australians, particularly given the country’s high rates of skin cancer.
