School holiday forecast to bring severe weather to NSW, Victoria and Tasmania with showers and wind coming for southeast

Millions of Australians across the southeast are being urged to prepare for a severe weather event with flash flooding and storms expected to hit the region over the coming days.

As school holidays kick off across the country, the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting severe weather to smash parts of the southeast thanks to a series of cold fronts, with northern Victoria, northern Tasmania and inland New South Wales expected to be the hardest hit.

A band of rain and storms stretching from western Queensland all the way down through New South Wales and into Victoria will bring widespread showers through multiple states, with flood watches and warnings already in place for parts of Victoria.

Senior forecaster Angus Hines said 50mm to 100mm of rain could fall in some areas, with some places likely to receive even more.

“It’s multiple different weather systems coming through in quick succession, which is going to bring rain to much of the country,” he said.

Hines said while larger cities won’t see rainfall totals as high as some regional areas, Melbourne is in for a particularly wet week.

Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra will also see wet conditions in the week ahead.

Sydney is expected to see some rain, however, the worst of the wet weather is forecast for inland New South Wales.

Snow is also forecast to develop in alpine areas on Thursday and into Friday morning.

A flood watch warning has been issued for parts of north east and central Victoria, with one minor flood warning already issued for the Kiewa River.

“Most of that rain is still to come. So these rivers are likely to see rises over the coming days really between about today and perhaps Friday,” Hines said.

Heavy rain is expected to drench much of the country’s southeast.

Rainfall is likely to result in minor to moderate flooding from Tuesday across the flood watch area, the warning read, with isolated major flooding possible.

Flood watches have been issued for multiple rivers across northern Victoria, including parts of the Upper Murray River, and parts of the Goulburn, Ovens and King Rivers.

The weather event also has the potential to bring severe thunderstorms and hail in parts of central New South Wales, as well as along the border regions of South Australia and Victoria in the northwestern part of the state.
