The first-year constable has thanked the colleagues who saved his life after he was shot during a violent siege.

Police officer Jordan May, 36, was on his final shift before a transfer to western Queensland when he was shot in the leg while responding to a domestic violence incident at Yengarie, near Maryborough on the Fraser Coast, on Friday evening.

His fellow officers braved the gunfire to drag him about 100m to safety and applied a tourniquet, actions police say saved his life, before he was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBH).

Recovering after surgery, May asked the Queensland Police Union (QPU) to share a message of thanks.

“I want to thank everyone involved in looking after me, from my colleagues in Maryborough to the amazing hospital staff here at the RBH,” he said, surrounded by his family flown in from New Zealand.

“I’m on the mend and have the support of friends and family who have not left my side.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on my feet and I can’t wait to get out of hospital.”

The union also paid tribute to the officers who risked their lives to rescue May.

“The community will rightly focus on the officer who was shot but they should not overlook for a moment the incredible bravery of the police who risked everything to bring him out of that situation alive,” the QPU said.

Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior and North Coast regional representative Jake Lacy visited May in hospital, where he was pictured smiling alongside his two brothers, Hayden and Simon.

May underwent surgery after suffering a shattered femur.

The man accused of opening fire, 45-year-old Adam O’Shea, was later found dead at the property from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.
