A female police officer was stabbed in the neck during a confrontation with an armed man, who was then shot by other officers, in Adelaide’s north on Wednesday.

The officer was rushed to hospital with serious injuries while the alleged 27-year-old offender was also being treated for non-life-threatening injuries to his leg.

The incident prompted a major crime response and has also sparked multiple internal investigations.

SA Police Acting Assistant Commissioner David O’Donovan said officers were called to “multiple reports from members of the public regarding a male, who was armed with a knife, running on Main North Rd at Elizabeth East”.

“Police acted immediately to locate and engage the man in order to protect public safety,” he said.

“During the confrontation, a police officer was stabbed in the neck and the armed man was shot by police.”

Paramedics were then called to the stretch of road near Fairfield Rd and Main North Rd, with southbound traffic being diverted around the scene.

The highly trained MedSTAR team of paramedics was dispatched at 11.22am as multiple emergency crews were also sent to nearby Halsey Rd for support and screening.

The female officer was rushed to hospital and is receiving treatment for serious injuries, however her condition remains unknown.

“Our immediate concern obviously is for the welfare of the police officer,” O’Donovan said.

“The police officer was transported immediately to hospital and is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries. We are providing appropriate support for her colleagues and, of course, for her family.”

The man was shot once in the leg and taken to hospital under police guard.

“The suspect ... received a gunshot injury to the leg. He was also transported to hospital and is also receiving medical care,” O’Donovan said.

“His injuries are not deemed to be life-threatening.”

O’Donovan stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Major Crime detectives, local investigators and the Internal Investigation Branch are now on scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

“We are making an appeal to members of the public who may have witnessed the events of this morning,” O’Donovan said.

“Anyone who was walking in the area but, in particular, anyone who was driving through the area who may have dashcam, to please come forward and assist us with the investigation.
