A young man has been flown to hospital after being mauled by a “large crocodile” at a remote camping spot, the second such incident in the region in five months.

The man, aged in his 20s, was attacked Saturday on a beach next to an area known locally as Hidden Creek, about 50km north of Broome, in WA’s Kimberley.

The idyllic site, near the Coulomb Point Nature Reserve on the Dampier Peninsula, is about 2000km north of Perth.

The man was taken to Broome Hospital and was in a stable condition when transferred via the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Royal Perth.

He remains in a stable condition in hospital on Tuesday, 7NEWS.com.au has been told.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions said it was informed about the incident on Monday and has spoken with his family.

“Parks and Wildlife Service staff have already spoken with a relative of the man who was attacked and intend to discuss the incident further with those involved,” the department said.

“DBCA will also undertake a site visit this week, as part of the investigation.”

The department said crocodiles are common in the Kimberley and urged locals and visitors to remain “crocwise” along the coast and by bodies of water in northern Australia.

That includes estuaries, tidal rivers, river pools and the water around offshore islands.

“Your safety is your responsibility,” the department said.

It is reportedly the second crocodile attack in WA’s Kimberley region this year.
