Veteran AFL star Jake Stringer has lent a helping hand to fire crews when he spotted a raging house blaze in the Melbourne suburb of South Kingsville on Tuesday (today).

Ahead of his return to training in Sydney later this week, the GWS Giants forward was on his way to a meeting in Melbourne when he noticed a concerned resident, thick smoke, and the suburban home on fire.

Wasting no time, the 32-year-old jumped out of his car to help another man, banging on the doors of neighbours to make sure the nearby homes were evacuated.

Among the neighbouring properties was a kindergarten with 40 people inside.

There were several explosions from inside the burning property, and Stringer covered his face due to the thick smoke ... but could not get near the burning house.

He remained at the scene when almost 40 firefighters turned up to extinguish the flames.

“Our priority was there was a kindergarten right next door, to evacuate the 40 people from the kindergarten as well as the neighbouring proprties, so we thank all the neighbours for getting out of their properties and keeping everybody safe,” Footscray senior station officer Ben Morris said.

South Kingsville is in Melbourne’s south-west, not far from Yarraville, and emergency services were made aware of the fire shortly after midday.

“Fire crews arrived to find a single storey weatherboard home fully alight,” a statement said.

“Firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the burning home to conduct a search to ensure no persons were inside.

“Due to the intensity of the fire, Fire Recue Victoria crews were unable to confirm the building was unoccupied, but reports were that the owner was overseas.

“Firefighters attacked the fire with multiple hoselines, whilst also protecting homes on either side from fire spread. Firefighting operations were hampered by a lack of available water and live powerlines across the road.”

The house was destroyed in the fire but no injuries were reported.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but will be investigated,” the statement said.

Stringer is in the final year of his contract with GWS and it is unclear if he will receive an extension.

He was in sizzling form when the Giants stunned ladder-leaders Fremantle and booted seven goals, but was off the boil two weeks later when GWS lost to (then) cellar-dweller Esendon, with Stringer booting 0.7.

Stringer started his career at the Western Bulldogs, was an All-Australian in 2015, and a premiership player in 2016.

He then moved to Essendon and played 123 games in red and black before he was offloaded to the Giants after the 2024 season.
