Four men have been charged after allegedly breaking into a home and assaulting a resident before abducting two kids.

The group of men are accused of breaking into the home on Richmond St in Muswellbrook, in the NSW Hunter Region, about 1.15am on June 6.

A male resident attempted to confront the group and was allegedly attacked with a flurry of kicks and punches to his body and head. He was also allegedly hit over the head with a bottle.

Officers were told on arrival that two children, aged four and seven, were allegedly taken during the incident.

The injured man was rushed to Muswellbrook Hospital for a suspected facial fracture and a concussion while a 36-year-old man was arrested soon after following a brief foot pursuit.

A desperate search located the missing children a short distance from the crime scene.

The 36-year-old was later charged with special aggravated break and enter and refused bail while before the courts.

More than a month later, detectives arrested a 33-year-old man on Mount St in Scone, about 26km north of the alleged home invasion.

Two other men, aged 23 and 27 were arrested at Muswellbrook Police Station later that day.

All three men were charged with domestic violence take or detain a child with intent to remove for parental control, and special aggravated break and enter.

The 27-year-old was also charged with allegedly contravening an Apprehended Violence Order.

They are all expected to appear before Bail Division Court on Saturday.

Investigation into the incident under Strike Force Tope remain ongoing.
