Much-loved jockey Blake Shinn will be back in the saddle on Saturday marking his return to racing after horrible fall on last year’s Melbourne Cup Day.

Last year in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes, Shinn came off his mount and shattered his leg in four places, later having a metal rod inserted into the leg to stabilise the severe compound fracture.

Now, 270 days later, Shinn will head back to Flemington and incredibly has six rides to his name (Nearco Frod in Race 1, Eurocanto - Race 2, Flying Mikki - Race 4, Touchdown - Race 6, War Machine - Race 7, and Craig - Race 8).

He has also issued a heartwarming statement, saying he’s “incredibly excited” to be returning to Flemington.

“It’s been a challenging journey, but one that has only strengthened my appreciation for the sport,” Shinn said.

“I’m feeling refreshed, motivated, and ready to get back doing what I’m passionate about.

“I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout my recovery, my family, friends, owners, trainers, my medical team, and the wider racing community.

“I’m looking forward to reuniting with trainers and owners building new partnerships and giving every horse I ride the very best opportunity, I can’t wait to be back in the saddle, and am excited for what the future holds.”

Shinn, 38, is Melbourne Cup winner, riding Viewed in the famous race way back in 2008.

The 28-time Group 1 winning-jockey said it had been a long road to get back to racing and was confident he had plenty of trackwork, jumpouts and trials under his belt.

“I don’t think I’ve left any stone unturned,” he told News Corp.

“I’m ready to go full throttle, like I have, as hard as I’ve ever gone.”

Shinn’s best chance on Saturday will be in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) where he will ride favourite War Machine for the Lindsay Park team of Ben, Will and J D Hayes.  

War Machine is a Group 1 winner and Shinn has previously guided him to victory.

“I knew this was his target probably a little while ago, and I’ve won on him down the straight before … so it’s nice to be able to come back and ride a horse of his calibre,” Shinn said.

“I’m pretty chuffed to be back aboard him.”
