It’s the initiative created by Amex that supports small businesses nationwide, known otherwise as Shop Small.

Now in its 14th year, Amex’s Shop Small initiative backs small businesses and encourages consumers to spend in their local communities.

This means that Amex Card Members get access to all of the benefits and rewards that actually reward with their Card, whilst supporting their favourite local small businesses at the same time.

And this year, the Shop Small campaign is offering even more support for small business owners, with up to AUD $2 million in funding available via the Amex Shop Small Grants program*.

There will up to 100 grants available of $20,000 each, for small businesses and their owners.

The program will provide an initial $1 million — with $20,000 grants to 50 small business owners across Australia.

Plus, every time an Amex Card Member makes an eligible transaction at participating Shop Small businesses during 1-7 August 2026, Amex pledges to contribute an additional $1 to the Grants program, up to $1 million, providing up to 50 additional grants of $20,000 each.**

According to internal Amex data from 2013 to 2025 inclusive, Amex has driven $9.8 billion in spending to participating small businesses in Australia.

There’s a huge array of participating small businesses involved in the initiative, many of which are perfect for inspiring your next trip out.

Speaking to 7You about the initiative and this year’s new Shop Small Grant program, the Managing Director of American Express Australia and New Zealand Corinna Davison said:

“Small businesses help shape the character of our communities. They create local jobs, bring people together and make our neighbourhoods more vibrant, resilient and distinctive.

“This year, together with our Card Members and participating businesses, we’re aiming to provide up to $2 million in Shop Small Grant funding.

“It’s an opportunity for up to 100 small businesses to access funds that can help them invest in their future and continue making a difference in the communities they serve.

“For the past 14 years, Shop Small has celebrated the people behind these businesses and reminded us that where we choose to spend has a real impact. Every time someone shops small, they’re backing the passion, hard work and ambition of a local business owner.”

Amex’s Shop Small Grant applications open from 27 July 2026 and close on 6 September 2026.

Amex will contribute an additional $1 to the Shop Small Grant program, up to $1 million every time a Card Member makes an eligible purchase at a participating Shop Small business from 1-7 August 2026.
